Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:

  1. demonstrate developed skills, methods and techniques in translating different text types from English into Korean
  2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a wide range of topic-based vocabulary, idioms and expressions
  3. demonstrate intellectual perspectives on the activity of translation

Workload

Total of 20 weeks teaching with 1 hours classroom contact per week consisting of a 1 hour seminar.

Scope and syllabus

This module aims to familiarise students with the process and techniques of translating from English into Korean, help develop their intellectual perspectives on translation methods, and provide them with practical experience of translation. Diverse styles of texts (e.g., literary, academic, media, technical and commercial, etc.) will be assigned for translation and discussion in class. The course will also help students expand their knowledge of topic-based vocabulary, and heighten their awareness of the different features of texts, styles and methods of translation, and cultural implications.

Method of assessment

Portfolio of translation tasks assigned during the course of 2000 words (40%); translation of an English text into Korean, with a brief commentary of 3000 words (60%).
