Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

By the end of this course, students will have gained insight into research methodology and a deeper understanding of the academic discourse in English-language literature in relation to the chosen topic and developed research skills that may assist in preparation for the MA dissertation.


This course is taught over 10 weeks with 1.5 hours per week spent in a seminar.

Scope and syllabus

The objective of this course is to provide the student with the opportunity to carry out study and research on a specific area of interest in greater depth and breadth than more traditional lecture-based courses permit. The course will be supervised by the tutor whose own research interests best match those of the student. In this course the focus will be on English-language material. This course can be taken on it's own or together with Directed Readings in Korean Studies B.

Method of assessment

An essay of 2000 words to be submitted on day 1, week 7 in the term in which the course is taught.  This essay will be marked by the mark will not count towards the final mark.  An essay of 5000 words to be submitted on day 1, term after which the course is taught (100%).  

Suggested reading

A reading list will be derived, in collaboration between the student and the tutor, depending on the specific area of research proposed.
