Module Code:
Unit value:
Taught in:
Term 2

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

  • a knowledge of the motivation for the basic architecture of LFG
  • practical ability in LFG analysis
  • an ability to apply advanced syntactic analysis to a range of languages
  • some familiarity with syntactic theories with different architectural or analytical assumptions

Scope and syllabus

The course focuses on the investigation of a selected set of problems within a major contemporary framework, Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG). The purpose of this study will be to highlight the defining assumptions of the framework, and illuminate the way in which it approaches these problems, with a view to providing a viable theory of
syntax appropriate for the typologically rich variety found in the world's languages. Comparisons will be made with competing frameworks, and alternative analyses will be considered.

Method of assessment

One essay of 5,000 words to be submitted on day one of the term following teaching.
