  • Research skills through the development and completion of an extended piece of independent research using primary sources.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the current debates about the role of media and Information Communication Technologies in the development process and their appropriate use to define a research project
  • Application of critical skills to different kinds of media materials and practices relevant to specific development fields such as health, education and gender, deriving predominantly from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, enabling analytical understanding of situated practices.

Scope and syllabus

This 10,000 word research project focuses on a specific topic that the student selects from materials presented in the formal courses in Media in Development. It is normally written over the summer period and submitted in September. The dissertation provides the opportunity for individual research that includes an element of primary field research or the use of multimedia elements or both.

Method of assessment

One 10,000 word dissertation (100%).
