Module overview
This course looks at the definitions, boundaries and borders placed upon and around culture. It asks how the study of culture can critically engage with gendered and racialised histories and structures of power.
The module investigates discourses of universalism and Enlightenment, civilisation and barbarism, cultural hybridity versus cultural purity. It will allow students to identify, use and critique concepts and methodologies employed across a number of academic disciplines. Major discussions which are addressed on the module include the relationship between culture and power, the impact of Edward Said’s Orientalism theory, the role of museums in the preservation and presentation of culture, race and identity, the interdependence of culture and language and the role of education.
