Reading and preparing for exams

Exams often account for 60% or more of assessment on SOAS programmes, but do not always take a proportionate amount of time in preparation during the academic year.

This new 5 week course aims to help students start to prepare well in advance for exams which usually come in May. Often students will find themselves disorientated and shocked close to exam time at the amount of work they have to catch up on.

This course is designed to help prepare early, identify the gaps in preparation thus far, understand what the demands of exams are and identify what types of question or content area may come up in your particular subject and do a practice timed writing on a question of your choosing.

By the end of the course, students should have a study plan which will see them well prepared for the beginning of their exams.

The course will cover the following areas:

  1. Identifying gaps in knowledge
  2. Approaches to reading, notetaking and organising notes
  3. Targeting topics and questions-reviewing past papers
  4. Making a study plan
  5. The type of essay exams require
