Module overview

This module is based on directed studies on a topic agreed with the supervisor. The topic should be related to language policy, language history, cultural background, or linguistic background of a specific language area.

Prerequisites

This module is available on any UG programme that allows an introductory-level language module as an option, except:

-BA African Studies / BA African Studies and..

-BA Middle Eastern Studies / BA Middle Eastern Studies and..

-BA South Asian Studies / BA South Asian Studies and..

-BA South East Asian Studies / BA South East Asian Studies and..

students on the above modules may only take this module at the discretion of the LTC under special circumstances in order to replace compulsory language modules.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

1. Demonstrate some knowledge of the language policy, language history, cultural or linguistic background of the language area studied.

2. Show familiarity with some of the key texts relates to the study of a particular language area.

Workload

2 taught hours of project supervision total.

Scope and syllabus

A topic to be agreed in consultation with the supervisor.

Method of assessment

  • One essay of 2,000 words. Normally due in Term 3
  • The exact assessment deadline dates are published on the relevant module Moodle/BLE page

This is a specific project to be agreed by the convenor. Languages in Asia and Africa are generally well covered by SOAS library.
