Dissertation in Ancient Near Eastern Languages

The dissertation is a core component of all Masters programmes at SOAS. The supervised dissertation research requires the ability to work independently on an original piece of research, to demonstrate familiarity with the relevant literature and present the resulting dissertation in a clear and organised format.

The research and writing of the Masters dissertation is a crucial component of Research-based Masters training.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

1. independently identify an Assyriological research topic and  formulate a relevant research question
2. carry through an independent project of research
3. identify the primary and secondary literature needed to address a research question in Assyriology
4. gather evidence and formulate arguments

Workload

A total of 3 hours project supervision throughout the year along with one hour practical classes and/or workshops during the year totalling 4 hours.

Scope and syllabus

The Dissertation will encourage the student to pursue a sustained piece of independent research, which will complement the mainly language and philologically based skills learned in the other modules.

Method of assessment

A literature review of 2,000 words to be submitted on day 5, week 1, term 3 (10%); a 10 minute presentation of dissertation topic (5%); a 10,000 dissertation to be submitted online in September (85%).
