Module overview

This course is not taught through weekly lectures. In term 1, a 2-hour seminar will take place to introduce students to basic aspects of the organisation and writing of a dissertation in the area of global economic governance. Students will be asked to discuss topics for their dissertation in face-to-face meetings with the programme convenors, and to prepare a dissertation proposal by the start of term 2. In term 2, students will be allocated dissertation supervisors. At least one further face-to-face meeting with the programme convenors will take place for all students individually to assess progress on planning for the dissertation.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of the course, a student should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • critically appraise competing perspectives on global economic governance and policy debates in this area, their intellectual origins and their theoretical underpinnings.
  • apply the analytical frameworks necessary for evaluating contemporary debates on global economic governance, institutions and policies to the independent and critical analysis of specific issues of global economic governance and/or case studies chosen for dissertation research
  • analyse problems of the implementation and enforcement of institutional and economic governance policies and to  develop reform proposals for the specific issues of global economic governance and/or case studies chosen for dissertation research.
  • (for MSc GEG research students): apply one or more research methods systematically to a chosen research issue or theme.
  • evaluate and synthesise different theoretical and conceptual arguments and to develop reasoned and researched argument, clearly, independently and critically.
