Module overview
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
On successful completion of this course, a student will have:
- gained an overview of the main issues and debates within the study of gender in the Middle East;
- been introduced to a variety of empirical realities and conditions of women's lives, gender ideologies and relations in the Middle East;
- challenged stereotypical ideas about femininities and masculinities as well as gender relations in the Middle East;
- have acquired a critical understanding of a range of methodologies and theoretical frameworks employed in the study of gender in the Middle East;
- be able to critically evaluate a variety of books, journals and other sources of information relevant to the topics studied on the course;
- have produced weekly written work (reaction papers) as well as detailed written work on one approved topic relevant to the course.
Workload
Teaching takes place through a weekly 2 hour lecture and 1 hour tutorials
Method of assessment
Students are required to submit an essay of no more than 4000 words, worth 50% of the course. Student must also submit a portfolio of their four best reaction papers (600-800 words each) worth 50% of the course.
