- the ability to produce passages in written Hausa of medium length on everyday and some specialised topics
- the ability to understand spoken Hausa and to engage in spoken discourse of medium complexity on everyday and some specialised topics
Total of 22 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week.
Scope and syllabus
This module builds upon the first-year language work on oral and written language proficiency, using Advanced Hausa Reader (Jaggar) and Hausar Baka (Randell et al.). Practice is given in translation into and out of Hausa, paying attention to differing styles and registers, in addition to composition. Conversation and multimedia computer-assisted language learning classes help to improve oral expression and comprehension skills. The aim is to develop a higher level of functional competence, using a combination of basic grammar and vocabulary sufficient to accurately handle straightforward needs in a social setting.
Method of assessment
One written paper (90%) and an oral examination (10%) taken in May/June.
