Module overview

This module is a course in Modern Hebrew Language for students who have completed two years (or equivalent) of Hebrew langauge instruction.

The course will be taught in Hebrw, with the students gaining full immersion in the language and the opportunity to enhance their proficiency in language use in reading, writing, hearing and speaking.

The module will expose students to Hebrew language use in a variety of registers,contexts and media.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of the course, a student should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • read and understand a modern Hebrew written text from the past 100 years, with some help.

  • write a short opinion piece in Hebrew and will be able to present facts,express views and argue.

  • to follow and understand the main points in a radio talk show or a television programme in Hebrew

  • to talk in Hebrew about any subject, with confidence and accuracy.

Workload

This course will be taught over 22 weeks with 2-hours' classroom contact per week in language classes.

Scope and syllabus

The Hebrew verb system, the passive forms, and incomplete verb roots and their forms in all tenses.

  • Syntax: subordination, causal and temporal phrases
  • Morphology: patterns for nouns, nominal sentences and the noun construct
  • Vocabulary: great focus on expanding and enriching vocabulary to different registers of the language.

Method of assessment

  • One 15-minute oral exam (20%)
  • One 3-hour exam (80%)
