Module overview

A 10,000 word essay on any approved topic in African studies. Normally research for this project will be based on primary source materials (and field research, if possible). The project is undertaken under the supervision of a teacher who must approve the topic before research is begun and who will supervise its progress. The topic must be presented and approved in the summer term of the student’s 2nd/3rd year so that research can begin during the summer vacation. The final essay is due for submission on day 1 of week 1 of Term 3 of the student’s final (3rd/4th) year. Students doing an Independent study project may be required to participate in relevant seminar classes. Students will normally have attained a mark of 60% or above in an appropriate disciplinary module in the previous session at SOAS.
