Module overview
Prerequisites
Normally students are required to have achieved an overall grade of 2:1 from their second year of the programme.
Students wishing to do an ISP must submit to the programme convenor a working title and a synopsis of 300 to 500 words of the proposed topic of the ISP (proposal forms can be collected from the faculty office). It must not be assumed that all proposals will be automatically approved. As an ISP is an optional part of the Linguistics degree, there is no guaranteed right for a student to do an ISP.
Students are strongly advised to start planning for an ISP in Term 2 of Year 2. Students should discuss their ideas at an early stage with the programme convenor and potential supervisors.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
Students will develop the skill to work independently on an approved topic of their choice in Linguistics. To do this they will identify an area of interest to them and define a research question, refine and pursue that question via library research and write an argued study project with footnotes and references in standard professional format.
