Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
The objective of the module is to provide the students with training in academic research and writing. At the end of the module the student should be able to talk/write with a high level of knowledge, skill and competence about the topic s/he has chosen to investigate for the purpose of the study project.
At the end of a module, a student should be able to demonstrate clear evidence of undertaking a detailed supervised study of a topic in South East Asian Studies. Candidates research their projects with guidance from an appropriate supervisor. This module will be examined by a project of 10,000 words.
Workload
10 hours supervision in total.
Scope and syllabus
An independent study project of 10,000 words on an approved topic in the language/literature/culture/society in one or more countries of the region of study in some depth. It provides the opportunity to seek out information from various sources, but in particular, to use the language of study in a focused way. Essay-writing skills learned in the first and second year of study will be put into practice.
Students taking this module must be in contact with the module convenor Dr Mulaika Hijjas as early as possible, ideally BEFORE they depart for the year abroad, for help formulating a suitable topic, identifying a supervisor and other support.
Method of assessment
- One 10,000 word essay to be submitted by the end term 3
