Module overview

This module is a core component of the 2 year programme(s) with Intensive Language (Japanese). Classes are taught by academic staff at a university in Japan and assessed as Pass/Fail only (a fully marked assessment is conducted at SOAS upon return). The intensive classroom environment and immersion experience of living and studying in Japan is designed to facilitate the student’s ability to build fluency within the appropriate daily social and cultural contexts.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

At the end of the module, a student should be able to demonstrate…

  1. knowledge and understanding of intermediate/advanced Japanese grammar
  2. knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Japanese vocabulary
  3. knowledge and understanding of the appropriateness of a wide range of Japanese structures and expressions in a given context
  4. the ability to understand passages in written Japanese of medium length on everyday and/or some specialised topics
  5. the ability to produce passages in written Japanese of medium length on everyday and/or some specialised topics
  6. the ability to understand spoken Japanese and to engage in spoken discourse of medium complexity on everyday and/or some specialised topics
  7. knowledge and understanding of the linguistic features and rhetorical conventions in Japanese written texts, particularly those pertaining to scholarship and research

Workload

This module will be taught over the summer period with 100 hours contact at a University in Japan.

Scope and syllabus

The module will be offered as a core component of the 24-month parent programme. The class will be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis upon return to SOAS.  The intensive classroom environment and immersion experience of living and studying in Japan is designed to facilitate the student’s ability to build fluency within the appropriate daily social and cultural contexts.

Method of assessment

An essay of 2,000 characters in Japanese to be submitted via Moodle (date will be announced on the Moodle system) (80%); an oral examination of 15 minutes (20%).
