Intensive Japanese 3 (MA)

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

At the end of the module, the student should be able to . . .

1. communicate fluently and appropriately in Japanese;
2. demonstrate a detailed knowledge and effective understanding of the structures, registers, etc of Japanese; in particular those pertaining to the discourse of specific academic disciplines
3. demonstrate a broad knowledge and, using appropriate methodologies, a critical understanding of the cultures and societies of Japan.

Also as a generic skills, the student should be able to . .

1. communicate information, ideas and arguments cogently and coherently both orally and in writing;
2. gather, process and evaluate critically information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources;
3. be an effective and self-aware independent learner.

Workload

This module will be taught over 22 weeks with 5 hours classroom contact per week consisting of 3 hours in lectures and 2 hours in seminars.

Scope and syllabus

This module further develops and consolidates the language skills which the students have acquired in Intensive Japanese 1 and 2. The topics will be chosen to reflect the disciplines of students. It aims to prepare the student to use the language actively in research and/or in employment. The aim will be to reach the Level C1 of CEFR.

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination paper taken in May/June (50%); one essay of 3,000 Japanese characters to be submitted on day 5, week 10, term 2 (20%);  an oral examination of 15 minutes (10%); portfolio (10%); regular tests and written test (10%).
