This optional unit presents an introductory framework for explaining major historical events at international level. It offers a critical assessment of key international issues in the modern political world from both Western and non-Western perspectives. Topics include:

• the impact of European expansion on non-western states
• decolonisation
• international politics after the Cold War
• the growth of international and non-governmental organisations
• problems of terrorism and refugees
• concepts of global justice and human rights
• the politics of the environment
