Japanese 1 B (PG)

In this module, students will learn how to communicate in simple, but structured Japanese on concrete and general everyday topics. Both spoken and written Japanese will be taught, including more Kanji characters than those covered at Japanese 1A.
On completion of this module, students should be able to convey simple information about them with some elaboration when asked, and to continue the conversation by asking about others. They will also learn to socialise with Japanese-speaking people on familiar topics, including their hobbies and studies.

From the beginning, students will be exposed to Japanese cultures as reflected in various situations and expressions used in everyday and familiar situations. This will also enable them to deepen their understanding of their own cultures and develop intercultural awareness.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of 15PJKH035: Japanese 1A (PG) or equivalent knowledge.

2)  Please take only one test at a time. If you find it too easy, take a higher-level test by visiting the relevant website. If it is too difficult, take a lower-level test via the relevant website.

3) Submit the relevant test to the module convenor (Dr. Natsuko Shibata Perera for Japanese 1B) np43@soas.ac.uk by 30 September via email when completed. Please only send the most suitable test rather than sending all the tests you have taken.

4) The subject of the email must be "Placement test for Japanese".

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will:

1. understand, when uttered clearly, simple requests, direction, and explanation on familiar topics or immediate concrete surroundings
2. can communicate in simple, direct information, using frequently used expressions
3. describe and present some familiar topics, if prepared in advance
4. read words in Kanji characters and short passages on familiar everyday topics and personal experiences
5. write limited Kanji characters, messages, and short passages on familiar personal matters, as well as to know some fundamental Japanese customs and cultures for better intercultural understanding

Workload

Total of 10 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week in language classes.

Scope and syllabus

• Talking about what you like and what you do
• Describing people and things
• Asking a favour
• Ordering food and drinks at a restaurant
• Writing a flyer about the party you are organising
• Writing questions for a simple survey, and short report about its result

Method of assessment

One two-hour written examination taken in May/June (60%); an oral examination of 15 minutes in May/June (20%); a mid term test of 40 minutes duration (week 4, term 2) (20%).

Core texts are all held in library, students will be informed of any necessary text books in introductory materials.
