Module overview

This module follows the K100: Elementary Korean module and will develop further the language competence in preparation for the study abroad in Korea in Year 3.

The module introduces further grammatical basics of Korean, through a combination of skills based classes, including the use of audio-visual materials and VLE. At the end of the second year, students have all the tools necessary to progress to the guided reading of literary and non-literary text, and are equipped with confidence to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity.

K100: Elementary Korean (155900842) is a pre-requisite

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

  • Gaining knowledge and understanding of intermediate Korean grammar

  • Gaining knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Korean vocabulary

  • Gaining knowledge and understanding of the appropriateness of a wide range of Korean structures and expressions in a given context

  • Gaining ability to understand and to produce passages written in Korean of medium length on everyday and some specialized topics

  • Gaining ability to understand spoken Korean and to engage in short spoken discourse on everyday and some specialized topics

  • Gaining ability to translate from and to Korean of medium length with use of appropriate language on everyday and some specialized topics

Workload

Total taught hours : 100 hours. 2 hours of lectures, 2 hours of seminars and 1 hour of Language Laboratory Work, per week for 20 weeks.

Independent study : 200 hours

Total hours for module : 300 hours

Method of assessment

A three-hour written examination taken in May/June (60%)
