Performance 2

Can be taken either in one of the traditions taught at SOAS, or in another vocal or instrumental tradition of Asia and Africa (or their diaspora communities) taught by an approved teacher outside SOAS. The chosen tradition will normally be from the same geographical region as an Area Music course taken in the same or adjacent academic year.

Prerequisites

Performance 1 is normally a prerequisite.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

To extend performance skills beyond the level achieved in Performance 1. Students will, by the end of the course, play at least three pieces of medium difficulty on the instrument(s) chosen, and have a good grasp of performance theory in relation to the instrument(s) chosen.

Workload

Fortnightly one-hour seminars, and individual lessons by arrangement

Method of assessment

• Self-reflective essay (worth 30%)
• Performance exam (worth 70%)
