Module overview

This module introduces students to the principles of management. It starts by considering organisational objectives and how management functions may be combined to achieve them in the context of a changing business environment. Topics covered include: strategy and planning; financial management; human resource management; organisation; governance; cross cultural management; motivation; innovation and technology; marketing; leadership and control; business ethics; environmental management strategies; the external business environment; price and non-price competition; the regulatory environment. Each of these topics is considered individually before discussing how different management functions combine and interact with each other and with external factors to shape organisational and business performance.

Each topic is considered in the context of the theoretical and empirical literature using key readings, quantitative and qualitative empirical evidence and cases.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

At the end of this module, a student should be able to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • The objectives of organisations
  • The core functions of management
  • The combination of core functions via strategy and planning
  • The external economic and regulatory environment
  • How internal and external factors combine to shape organisational performance
  • Empirical applications based on quantitative analysis and case studies
