Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
At the end of a module, a student should be able to demonstrate . . .
- a knowledge and understanding of Thai grammar at an appropriate level for an advanced learner who has spent a year studying the language in Thailand
- a level of passive and active Thai vocabulary at an appropriate level for an advanced learner who has spent a year studying the language in Thailand
- an ability to recognize nuances of meaning in spoken Thai, to engage in extended, in-depth discussion, on both general topics and aspects of contemporary Thai society, and to make oral presentations on both general and Thai-specific topics
- an ability to read and translate into English passages of authentic Thai written in a variety of styles and drawn from a wide range of sources and to draw inferences and recognize nuances of meaning
- an ability to translate complex English passages into Thai, using correct grammar and spelling
- an ability to write extended expository essays in Thai on a variety of subjects
This module is taught over 22 weeks with 2 hours classroom contact per week.
Scope and syllabus
The syllabus of this 4th year module provides the materials and learning environment for the student to demonstrate and build upon the skills acquired while studying at a Thai university during the previous year.
The objectives of the module are to further develop the student’s ability to:
- understand Thai spoken at normal speed and to recognize nuances of meaning in oral discourse; engage in extended, in-depth discussion, on general and Thai-specific topics; make oral presentations with accuracy and fluency
- read/translate/summarize/extract information/ recognize nuances of meaning / draw inferences from authentic Thai texts drawn from a range of sources
- translate complex English passages into Thai using correct grammar and spelling
- write extended essays in Thai presenting reasoned arguments
Method of assessment
One three-hour written examination taken in May/June (70%); an oral examination of 20 minutes (20%); regular written homework assignments (10%).
