Module overview

The second part is devoted to the period following the death of Atatürk and covers all the major developments, with a special focus on contemporary issues and the political agenda following the liberalization of the Turkish media in the 1980s.

The course reviews the key developments in the post-WWII period and assesses the political and military system as well as the politics or religion and identity, along with the treatment of Muslim (Kurds, Alevis) and non-Muslim minorities.  In terms of understanding contemporary Turkey, the rise of the AKP and the different phases of Erdoğan’s rule are examined along with the implications of “raising a religious generation”.  The foreign policy of Turkey and its relations with the EU and the Middle East and Greece and Cyprus are also reviewed.
