Synopsis

The is the story of a simple Muslim girl, name Cahaya (19) who arrives in Jakarta from her village in Java to find her father who left her when she was only four years old.

This is her first trip to the big city. All she brings with her is a picture of her together with her estranged father and an address which she managed steal from her mother. Cahaya feels like a stranger in a foreign land. She is not used to the hustle and bustle of the big city.

The search for the father leads her to a rundown apartment complex where her estranged father lives. As she asks around for information regarding the father a lady who lives in the building tells Cahaya that she can find her father in a place called Taman Lawang. She is surprised to discover this is a park frequented by transvestite streetwalkers

Lovely Man is a film about how a simple girl with strong Islamic values discovers that her long lost father is a transvestite working in the streets of Jakarta. The story unfolds in that one night which they spend together walking the streets of Jakarta.
