Synopsis

Since February 2009, Aman Durga Sipatiti (a tattoo artist based in Jakarta) has made several visits to Matotonan and Sakuddei, in the interior of South Siberut in the mentawai islands.  The purposes of these visits was to document the tattoo tradition of Mentawai. The Mentawai tattoo tradition is almost ‘extinct’ and these days it only remains on Siberut because at the end of the 1970s the New Order ‘abolished’ the animist beliefs there. In addition to recording and documenting the tatto designs which still exist, Durga also collaborates with the sipatiti (Mentawai traditional tattooist) to hold a workshop and to finish their tattoos which had not yet been completed.
