This talk, based on recent research in Indonesia, will look at how Indonesian fashion design is currently presented within and outside Indonesia e.g. through the ‘fashion weeks’ organised by powerful media groups. It will focus on the political significance of the ‘fashion week’ and it will begin to unveil the multiple negotiations and mediations surrounding the presentation of fashion design. The increasing search for alternatives to the rigidity of the ‘fashion week’ and a countering of its politics of representation will be noted, exploring ‘non-mainstream’ fashion events as also the push towards realigning fashion with the arts, encouraging creative collaboration with visual and performing artists, often within an inter-Asian context.
Alessandra Lopez y Royo is Research Associate of the Centre for Media Studies, SOAS. After a career as a university lecturer she immersed herself in the world of fashion and spent the past ten years working as a fashion model and writing about fashion. In 2015 she donned her academic hat once again and went back to Indonesia to research Indonesian fashion, with a fellowship awarded by ASEASUK/British Academy. She is currently working on a book related to her research.
