Abstract
The 1965/6 genocide in Indonesia is one of the least known massacres in the post-World War II period. Triggered by a putsch of leftist officers, it was sparked by accusations of sexual debaucehry committed by young women belonging to the communist women's movement. In this presentation I discuss the background of the putsch and the genocide and then continue to analyse the silence, also among Indonesianists, on the success of the mass propaganda waged by the military.
