Prof. Healey is a leading international authority on the development of the alphabet and has published a wide range of monographs focussing on Syriac and epigraphy. His co-authored work, with the late Prof. Han J.W. Drijvers, Old Syriac inscriptions of Edessa and Oshroene (Brill, Leiden: 1999) is the seminal study of the early Syriac script.

Prof. Healey has also written extensively on the Christian communities of the Middle East in whom he takes an active interest.
