In this workshop researchers from the IDCEA project (Industrial Development, Construction and Employment in Africawww.soas.ac.uk/idcea ) present the main findings of 4 years of research on employment patterns and outcomes in the infrastructure construction and manufacturing sectors in Angola and Ethiopia, where large-scale surveys of workers and extensive qualitative research were conducted between 2016 and 2018. The speakers will present the research design and main findings of the project and discuss the trends in labour relations in Chinese firms in Africa in comparison with other firms active in the same sub-sectors. Two discussants with substantial research experience on China-Africa themes will also contribute with reflections on the main findings of this project and their implications for research and policy. The event will be followed by a networking reception which will include the exhibition of 25 photos taken from field sites in Angola and Ethiopia by Davide Scalenghe.
