From voluntourism to learning service: a journey through international volunteering
The increased demand for international volunteering opportunities, from short-term “voluntourism” trips to gap year service programs has lead to a significant shift in global volunteering offerings. Join us for a discussion on volunteer travel with Daniela Papi as she talks through her own journey of founding and running a volunteer travel company and later shifting away from offering service projects. She will explore the positive impacts and dangerous pitfalls she has seen from her own work as well as from the research she had done for her upcoming book, Learning Service. Daniela spent six years living in Cambodia where she founded a youth leadership and education organization, PEPY, a development education travel company PEPY Tours, and an education and advocacy organization committed to helping people rethink volunteer travel, Learning Service. In addition to her work with Learning Service, Daniela works at the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford’s Saïd Business School and is a lecturer for an MBA course on entrepreneurship.
