Supporting Documentation

Applicants will be required to provide the following supporting documentation giving evidence of the following:

  1. Copy of an identification document (electronic/photocopy)
  2. Degree certificates or transcripts (verified copy)
  3. English language proficiency (if first qualification was not taught in English) (electronic/photocopy)

Details about the acceptable forms of this evidence are listed below along with information about getting your documents verified.

Please make sure we receive your evidence in plenty of time before the application deadline. If you are unable to do this, please contact cedepadmin@soas.ac.uk. We reserve the right to request additional information and/or the original documents.

Please note: if a document/statement is not in English a translation may be required. Click here for more information.

We cannot obtain any of the above documents on your behalf.

1. Copy of an identification document

Please submit electronic or photocopied evidence of your full name (including any changes to your name) and date of birth – this must be one of the following:

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • National identification card
  • Aliens registration certificate
  • UK driving licence

If you have changed your name please supply one of the following to support your change of name:

  • Marriage certificate
  • Deed poll
  • Statutory declaration
  • Affidavit

Submission details: electronic copies (scanned/photographed) or photocopies of originals will be accepted. Do not provide originals.

2. Degree certificates or transcripts

Verified copies of your qualifications are required to confirm the details provided on your applications to study with us. If your degree was not awarded 'with Honours' or if you are applying on the basis of a professional qualification, you should also submit the final transcript of your qualification. The transcript must include all the subjects taken, the marks/grades obtained and the date of the final award.

All verified copies must be officially stamped, signed and dated by the named authority. Verifications should be made on the front of the certificate and not the back. They must also state their full name, job title/position and contact details.

Please note: if we need further information about a particular qualification (e.g. a transcript and/or syllabus), we may ask you to contact the appropriate awarding or examining authority to ask them to write directly to us giving further details of your qualifications.

Submission details: Verified photocopies of originals will be accepted. Do not provide originals.

3. English language proficiency

If your first degree was not taught in English, you will need to provide evidence of language ability. You will meet the English language requirement if you have passed any of the following within the past three years:

ELTS) International English Language Testing System An overall score of 7.0 or above, including a minimum of 7.0 on the written sub-test
Pearson Test of English (Academic) An overall score of 67 or above, including a minimum of 67 attained on each of the reading, writing, speaking and listening elements
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English An overall score of 185 or above, including a minimum of 185 attained on each of the reading, writing, speaking and listening sub-tests
(TOEFL) iBT Test of English as a Foreign Language An overall score of 95 or above, including a minimum of 24 attained on the reading and writing skills sub-tests and a minimum of 25 attained on the speaking sub-test and 22 attained on the listening sub-test

Getting your documents verified

Verification means that your original document has been seen and the photocopy has been sworn (stamped and signed) to be a true copy of the original. All verified copies must be officially stamped, signed and dated by the named authority. Verifications should be made on the front of the certificate and not the back. They must also state their full name, job title/position and contact details.

There are three ways to verify your documents:

  1. You can submit photocopies of your original educational documents provided these are verified as a true copy of the original by one of the following authorities:
    1. Barrister
    2. British Council
    3. British Consulate
    4. British Embassy
    5. British High Commission
    6. Commissioner of Oaths
    7. Court Registrar or Clerk
    8. Foreign Embassies
    9. Justice of the Peace
    10. Ministry of Education
    11. Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Foreign embassies
    12. Notary Public
    13. Solicitor
    14. South African Police Force
  2. You can submit photocopies of your original educational documents provided they have been verified as a true copy of the original by one of our recognised teaching institutions. Please contact the institution first to see if they can provide this service before you visit them.
  3. Contact the relevant awarding/examining authority and arrange for them to send direct to us a statement/transcript of your results. Details must clearly give your name, date of birth and University of London student reference number if available.

Do not send original documents - these will not be accepted.  If none of the three options above are available, please contact distancelearning@soas.ac.uk for further advice.We will make spot checks to confirm that this work has been carried out by them.

Translations

If a document/statement is not in English a translation may be required. Translations must be provided by either:

  • an official at an embassy or,
  • consulate or,
  • a recognised translator

An embossed stamp or similar mark of authority must be on the translation.

All translated documents must be accompanied by full details of:

  • translator's name
  • postal address
  • email address
  • telephone number

We will make spot checks to confirm that this work has been carried out by the named authority.
