SOAS alumnus and honorary fellow, Professor Gungwu Wang, a leading historian on China and China's relations with Southeast Asia, was awarded the 2020 Tang Prize in Sinology.

T’ung Ping-cheng truly cared for people. He was sociable but not brash, had humility but was never obsequious, had certainties in his views but never sought to force them on others. He was a lovely man, a pleasure to work with and a privilege to have known.

SOAS students won top prizes in the 17th Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition UK final, held at Queen Elizabeth II Centre on 24 March. Gareth Erskine goes on to be the First Prize winner at the 2018 International Final of the Chinese Bridge Competition.

Dr Xiaoning Lu, Lecturer in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and member of the Centre for Media and Film Studies at SOAS University of London, has been awarded a Research Fellowship by the Leverhulme Trust for a project on transnational film practices in China from 1949 to 1989 against the backdrop of the shifting global order.

Dr Ulrich Pagel, Reader in the Languages and Religions of Tibet and Central Asia (Department of Religions and Philosophies), has been awarded an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) grant of £792,550 for a project mapping the history of verbs in the Tibetan language.
