As part of their new partnership, JICA and SOAS are co-hosting a series of three seminars around the theme of ‘Disaster Management – Avoiding a Circus in Addressing a Crisis’.

The first of these seminars will be held on 30 November 2011, and focus on the controversial topic of ‘Information Aid? The Role of the Media in Responding to Disasters’. It features highly respected guest speakers Jon Snow (ITN journalist and Channel 4 News presenter) and Wataru Sawamura (London Bureau Chief and European Editor of the Japan newspaper The Asahi Shimbun), who will discuss how the media reports on disasters such as the Japan earthquake / tsunami and the Horn of Africa famine, and the controversy around the ethics and practices of the media in these difficult contexts.

The seminar will be chaired by Dr Andrew Collins, Director of the Disaster & Development Centre (University of Northumbria) and will be preceded by a Drinks Reception and a special screening of Jon Snow’s powerful ‘Tsunami Diary’. The venue for the seminar is the Henry Wellcome Auditorium at the Wellcome Conference Centre, 183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE. To reserve your place at this unique and timely event, please RSVP to Thomas Feeny by email: or by phone +44(0)20 7963 9554.

The second seminar in this series will take place on 11 January 2012, and will look at ‘Groundhog Aid? The Challenge of Reform within the International Humanitarian System’, and feature guest speakers from UNHCR and the Humanitarian Futures Programme at King’s College, London. The series then concludes on 19 January 2012 with a seminar on ‘Weathering the Weather – Building Community Resilience in an Unstable Climate’.
