SOAS University of London

Expert briefings

We have long-standing relationships with a number of overseas Ministries of Foreign Affairs and global charities who request tailored briefings for senior diplomats or staff members being posted to Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Typically these briefings are for one or two days and cover a range of topics including historical, political, economic and cultural background. They are a highly valued opportunity to talk to experts about specific issues affecting the region to ensure they are prepared for the particular challenges they will face on the ground.

Recipients of our expert briefings have said:

"Having now spent one week in Hong Kong in my new capacity as Sweden's Consul General here and in Macao, I can only underline that the two days I spent in London and at SOAS last week was the best possible preparation for me. I would like to stress that the briefings you arranged made it possible for me to discuss issues and learn things that cannot be found in books or newspaper articles. To be able to "pick the brains" of your briefers was certainly a privilege. I particularly appreciated that all the briefers were generous enough to share with me names of useful contacts in Hong Kong that I can use in my professional activities. And some of the briefers have even promised to see me next time they are in Hong Kong! That is what I call establishing a long-term relationship."

"Excellent course with broadly the right mix of topics and expert speakers. Stimulating, allowed for open discussion, and overall a great way to prepare for the new job".

- Economic Adviser, DFID-Malawi

"Well done - the seminar was spot-on. The day was an extremely useful introduction which gave great perspective... I only wish I could have had a longer seminar."

"I would like to thank you very much for an excellent briefing which you arranged for me and my husband at SOAS. We were filled with exciting new information and insights of the West Africa region. The two lunches were also excellent and I think we all enjoyed the presence of the Senegalese ambassador."
