SOAS does not have its own nursery or crèche, but we are able to offer some help with childcare, which is summarised below.
SOAS has found in the past that we are not a large enough institution to make running a nursery financially viable. Also many students and staff prefer to have financial assistance to access a nursery place nearer to their home, rather than bringing their children into central London with them.
SOAS Childcare Fund
The School has a Childcare Fund to help full-time student parents with up to £750 per academic year towards the cost of Ofsted registered childcare. For more details and to apply please see the following link: SOAS Hardship Funds
Please note that the scheme is now closed to new entrants. However, employees participating in the scheme before 30th September 2018 may continue in the scheme, as long as they remain eligible.
Alternatively, parents may access the new government scheme, Tax-Free Childcare. Information about eligibility and how to apply is available at Get Tax Free Childcare: step by step.
Local nursery provision in Higher Education Institutions
You cannot be guaranteed a place in another HEI’s nursery, but if you approach them directly, you may be lucky and find that they have a vacancy which they might allow your child to fill.
Also: check business directories (e.g. yell.com ) for private nurseries listed in central London.
Further information and support on childcare and related issues
In addition to the Student Services Welfare Advisors (email@example.com) the Students’ Union Officers may be able to offer additional advice and information about childcare and related issues. The Co-President responsible for Education and Welfare can be contacted on firstname.lastname@example.org.
