A Sustainable SOAS Estate
We are continually looking at ways in which the School can have a positive impact with regard to environmental sustainability. This includes everything from reducing carbon emissions, promoting sustainable travel and transport, increasing recycling and reuse, developing efficient procurement processes, and promoting more biodiverse urban estate.
New Builds and Refurbishments
We have been very active in this area with all building projects as far back as the Library Terraces addressing the issues raised by sustainable development and operation. A building sector rating for refurbishment projects rated the Library Transformation Project as ‘Very Good’. Nevertheless we have more challenges than most with an estate dating back to the 1940s and 1970s. We need to make our facilities, which are already intensively used, more accessible and available to our community, whilst reducing our impact on the environment.
SOAS Sustainability Group
The SOAS Sustainability Group consists of professional support and academic staff members, who work together to uphold and promote SOAS's sustainability agenda and in turn support positive environmental, social, and economic change.

If you would like to be involved in the group, please contact Josh West (Sustainability Officer) for more information.
SOAS Recycling Initiative
We are improving our recycling provision with more widely distributed bins which will allow more effective segregation of materials. This initiative is the result of collaboration between the Estates and Facilities Directorate and the Students' Union Green Society as well as taking account of similar schemes operated elsewhere.
Please see the Recycling page for more information, and visit the Greenthing website for more on what you can and can't recycle, as well as reuse options -
Green Kitchen and Food for Life Served Here
SOAS is currently in the process of becoming a Green Kitchen and Food For Life Served Here accredited institution. This is a hugely exciting venture to serve more fresh, healthy meals to our students, staff, and visitors, in a way that is more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable.
