Project Summary

Apatani shaman, Apatani valley, 1944-45

The project plans to digitise, research, catalogue and mount online approximately 10,000 photographs, as well as an unpublished field diary, from the Fürer-Haimendorf archive held in Special Collections at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. The resulting online resource will enable people across the world to look at and learn from this unparalleled documentation of tribal cultures in South Asia and the Himalayas during the middle decades of the twentieth century.

In addition to mounting these images online, the project will use specialist knowledge from field research in order to catalogue and describe them. A select group of images will also be cross-referenced with an unpublished field diary, film footage and written material in the collection.

The project is part of a longer-term strategy to mount online the entire Fürer-Haimendorf archive, as well as other special collections at SOAS.

The project, which runs from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2009, is funded by JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) digitisation programme 1.
