Gender and Linguistic Fieldwork Abstract
Does gender really matter in linguistic fieldwork?
Professor Anne Pauwels, SOAS, University of London
In this talk I will draw upon my 30 years' experience as a sociolinguistic researcher in various ' field settings to examine how, when, where and why gender mattered ( or not ) in my interactions and work with participants in language - focused research. Settings ranged from a multilingual classroom in rural Australia, a Vietnamese neighbourhood in Melbourne, a Greek wedding in Melbourne, to a convent school in Manila, a games parlour in Hong Kong and a choir practice in Vienna.
