Manual Handling

A large number of injuries, many of them to the back are caused through handling, lifting or moving objects (Manual Handling).

The majority of injuries are not necessarily caused by lifting or moving heavy objects but by the wrong methods of bending, twisting and straightening, even when dealing with relatively light objects.

A general overview of Manual Handling is included in Staff Induction.

Your team Safety Rep and the Health & Safety Manger ( will be able to provide additional support. 

When assessing Manual Handling:

  1. Start off with the aim to see if the Manual Handling activity can be avoided altogether.
  2. If not, ensure that a Manual Handling Risk Assessment is completed and the required training is arranged by contacting healthandsafety@soas,
