Abstract: The brief Spanish settlement on Taiwan created one of the few sources of documents explaining the way of life of Northern Formosan aborigines in the early 1600s. These documents are, however, fragmentary. The Spanish, at various points, attempted both to befriend and conquer the Formosan aborigines. The seminar will examine the Spanish documents and ask the following question: what was the relationship between the Formosan aborigines and the Spanish? There is no clear answer: the aborigines were both friends and enemies. The seminar will argue that is perhaps one reason why the Spanish failed to establish a significant foothold in Northern Taiwan.
