Roundtable on Crimes of Honour

Date: 16 November 1999Time: 12:00 AM

Venue: London

Type of Event: Meeting

This meeting brought together twenty key scholars, lawyers, journalists and human rights activists working either internationally or in different regions on the issue of 'crimes of honour', including participants from Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Pakistan, Turkey, and the UK and the UN Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial summary or arbitrary executions. The meeting was a valuable contribution to the comparative discussion of the various manifestations of 'crimes of honour' and strategies of response. A report of the discussions at this meeting was edited by Sara Hossain and Lynn Welchman, who received comments from a number of the Roundtable participants which were incorporated into the text.

The report, "Roundtable on Strategies to Address 'Crimes of Honour': A Summary Report", has since been published in YIMEL (Yearbook of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law, VI, 1999-2000) and in the WLUML (Women Living Under Muslim Laws) Occasional Paper No. 12. Download PDF version
