Palestine - The Women's Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling (WCLAC), Jerusalem
The Women's Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling is an independent Palestinian organisation with its main office in Jerusalem. Among its main projects are research on the killing of women through the framework of the 'Femicide Project', which seeks to document the legal, social and psychological factors contributing to the killing of women. The Femicide Project is directed by Dr. Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian. The Femicide Project is currently also working with the Jordanian Women's Union in Amman on related research.
Within the framework of cooperation with the CIMEL/INTERIGHTS 'Crimes of Honour' Project, WCLAC aims to hold two Judicial Colloquia, one in the West Bank and one in Jordan. The aim is to engage judicial officials in an open dialogue regarding the crime of femicide that is related to 'crimes of honour'.
Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian is currently working on a paper giving an overview of the challenges and opportunities of working with the judiciary, incorporating the results of the work of WCLAC on this project so far. The paper will be finalised, following the completion of the colloquia, for publication with the CIMEL/INTERIGHTS conference publication (for abstract see Publication).
