Fractional Teacher Pensions


All fractional staff are automatically entered into the School’s pension scheme; University Superannuation Scheme (USS).  Comprehensive information about SOAS pensions is available on the pensions webpages. 

Pension deductions will be made from your salary and the School will also contribute to the pension scheme on your behalf.  

Opting out

You can choose to opt out of a pension scheme if you want to but the School encourages you to consider remaining in your pension scheme once enrolled.  If you remain in the USS Pension Scheme you will build pension benefits which you will receive when you retire.  Both you and the School contribution to the USS pension scheme each month, and the Government will also contribute through tax relief.

If you wish to opt out of the USS pension scheme, we recommend that you first read the information on the USS website about opting out . To opt out, fill out the opt-out form on the USS website and send it to Payroll and Pensions. 

Please note that you will need to complete an opt-out form for each successive fixed-term contract including renewal of contracts.
