[…] Could you please let me know if you have any Syrian post-graduate students or visiting academics at your university; and if you are aware of any special problems, or of any special arrangements that are being made for them. If you have any information on how SOAS are helping Syrian students or dealing with any funding issues that would also be great.
SOAS would only have a record of the nationality of an academic if they had an employment contract with the School. As of 7 December, no member of academic staff was registered with Syrian nationality. Seven postgraduate students of Syrian nationality study at SOAS.
No special arrangements are in place, but SOAS has a Student Services team who are able to offer advice and support to any student who needs assistance with visa, welfare or financial issues, and this would clearly include students of Syrian nationality who needed help. In addition, the UK Border Agency has issued advice to Syrian students on concessions that the UK government is making for Syrian nationals studying or working in the UK who need to extend their stay, which SOAS would obviously take account of in its dealings with students of Syrian nationality.
