SOAS–Columbia University Dual Degree Programme (JD/LLM)

In partnership with the Columbia Law School in New York, SOAS School of Law is pleased to operate a successful Dual Degree Programme, integrating SOAS' one-year LLM degree programme (including our LLM specialisations) with the 3-year Juris Doctor (JD) postgraduate law programme at Columbia University.

Students of the Columbia Law School JD are eligible to register for and attend one of SOAS' unique LLM programmes in lieu of Year 3 of their JD degree. Students successfully completing the SOAS LLM will then have their SOAS LLM articulated back to Columbia to satisfy graduation requirements in New York.

Students successfully completing each of Year 1 and Year 2 of their Columbia JD degree as well as the one-year SOAS LLM degree programme (in Year 3) would then graduate with each of a SOAS LLM degree as well as a Columbia Law School JD degree after three years.

The SOAS School of Law convenes a suite of seven outstanding and unique LLM degree specialisations, in addition to our general LLM programme, which equips students with in-depth knowledge and expertise in some of the most critical social justice challenges facing our globalised world today. These specialisations include:

Participating in the Columbia-SOAS JD/LLM Dual Degree Programme provides students with an exceptional international education experience, engaging with leading legal scholars in New York and London.

Through the SOAS LLM pathway as part of the Columbia JD, students can open up new career opportunities with international civil society organisations and NGOs, policy think tanks and other public and private bodies concerned with the delivery of social justice policy and practice.

Reflecting SOAS' standing as the world’s leading centre for the study of Asia and Africa, students on the LLM programme are permitted to study a language, such as Arabic or Chinese, or a module from another discipline as part of their degree.
