SOAS University of London

JD LLM London Program

What is the JD/ LLM London programme?

This program offers students taking the J.D. at either Columbia, Connecticut or Hastings Universities the chance to take the LLM at SOAS. Students are given the unique opportunity to pursue their legal studies with a focus on the regions of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Popular courses include: Islamic, Chinese or African Law, Human Rights, Law and Development and Dispute and Conflict Resolution.

J.D/ LLM students are fully integrated into study at SOAS and have access to the same student facilities as all other postgraduate students, including the SOAS library – the UK’s national library for Asian and African studies. SOAS has one of the largest concentrations in the world of academics specialising on these regions and is consistently ranked among the top institutions in the UK for research and teaching. We offer world-class and renowned postgraduate courses in a diverse and lively campus, right in the heart of London.

How to apply

In the first instance, students should designate SOAS as their preferred institution for the LLM when applying to the J.D. Program at either Columbia, Connecticut or Hastings.
Students should then apply to the LLM by completing the Taught Masters application process.  Please follow the link on the right of this page for further details.

Can I study LLM modules without completing the full LLM degree?

Yes. Postgraduate Law students who would like to study LLM courses at SOAS for either one term or one year but do not want to complete the whole LLM degree can apply to do this through the Study Abroad programme.  Please complete the 'Study Abroad' application as instructed on the webpages and clearly indicate that you are interested in LLM studies.

Can I apply for postgraduate Law modules if I am not currently studying at Columbia, Connecticut or Hastings?

Yes. If you are a postgraduate Law student studying at another institution, you can still apply to study SOAS MA Law modules through the Study Abroad programme.  On this programme students can study at SOAS for part or all of an academic year. Please complete the application form on the webpage and clearly indicate that you would like to study postgraduate Law courses.
