Dr Joel Hayward holds various academic posts, including Dean of the Royal Air Force College, Co-Director of the RAF Centre for Air Power Studies and Head of King's College London's Air Power Studies Division. A defence analyst for many years, his teaching nowadays focuses on Just War and the ethics and ecological impact of modern air power. A Muslim himself, he also researches and regularly lectures on various aspects of Islam. He is the author or editor of eight books as well as dozens of book chapters, journal articles and encyclopaedia entries. He is a member of the British Armed Forces Muslim Association and serves as Strategic Policy Advisor to Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri and the international Minhaj-ul-Quran welfare, human-rights and education organisation that Dr Qadri heads. Unusually for a social scientist, Dr Hayward is also very active in the literary arts and has published works of both fiction and poetry. His second collection of poetry — Splitting the Moon: A Book of Islamic Poetry — is due out in 2011. He writes regular politics-related columns in emel and other Islamic magazines.
