Genocide remembrance in Rwanda and Israel
A talk sponsored by SOAS Centre for Jewish Studies, SOAS Centre for African Studies
To mark International Holocaust Day, The Centre for Jewish Studies and the Centre for African Studies will present at talk on the parallels of two of the most horrible genocides in modern times. Dr. Yair Wallach will chair this important topic which will include Prof. Sammy Smooha, University of Haifa and Dr. Jonathan Beloff, SOAS researcher.

Professor Sammy Smooha is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Haifa. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and President of the Israeli Sociological Society and won the 2008 Israel Prize for Sociology. Smooha studies Israeli society, with a focus on ethnic relations, in comparative perspective. He has published widely on the internal divisions and conflicts in Israel, and has authored and edited several books on Arab and Jewish relations. He is the Israel Institute Visiting Professor at the University of London-SOAS for the academic year 2016-17.
Jonathan Beloff is a PhD researcher at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London performing research on the African Great Lakes titled, “Viewing the World After Genocide: The Evolution of Rwandan Foreign Policy since 1994.” The research examines how Rwandan foreign policy has shifted since the end of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. His academic focus is on international relations, economic, social and political development in the African Great Lakes Region. Since 2008, he has travelled and worked in Rwanda as a researcher, editor and consultant for several governmental and civil society institutions.
