Language Centre FAQs

  • What languages are taught at SOAS Language Centre?

Our Short Courses lists the languages we may be able to schedule at some point during the year. We enrol termly in line with our term dates. Please see our Enrolment Page for current course timetables.

  • When do you enrol?

Enrolment opens 6 - 8 weeks before the start of each term, once we have published the timetables on our Enrolment Page. You are strongly recommended to apply as early as possible as places are first come first served.

  • What if I already have some knowledge of the language?

Please see our Applying Page for details on whether you will need an assessment.

  • Can I attend classes before enrolling?

No. Only those who have enrolled are allowed to attend our classes.

  • Can I choose the days/times of my classes?

This is only possible with Private Tuition arrangements as scheduled short courses run according to the published timetable. Students are only allowed to attend the classes for the course they are enrolled on.

  • Is there a minimum age for joining a course?

The Language Centre is a department of SOAS (University of London), so you must be at least 18.

  • Can I join a class late/Is there a waiting list?

It is not usually possible to join a class late, but you may contact the relevant Language Administrator to see if an exception can be made.
There are no waiting lists as such but you may ask them to contact you if there are places available in the next course to be offered.

  • Can I get a formal qualification?

Although not accredited, a Certificate of Attendance can be provided upon request for our short courses.

  • What are the fees and are there any discounts available?

Please see our Fees Page for full information.

  • Can I make a part payment for a course?

No. All course fees must be paid in full upon enrolment.

  • Can I ask for my money back if I can’t/don’t attend the course or change my mind?

This is not possible. We ask all applicants to make informed decisions before applying for a course. In fairness to everyone, the Terms and Conditions apply to all.

  • Do I need to have an e-mail account?

Yes. E-mail is the primary form of communication at SOAS Language Centre.

  • Can I move to another course once I’ve paid?

This may be possible, but you will need to email to the relevant Language Administrator to check.

  • Can I join a course if I'm not a SOAS student?

Yes, we welcome members of the public as well as SOAS students. You do not need to be a SOAS student to join our courses.

  • What if I want private tuition?

Please see our information on Private Tuition.
