Language Centre FAQs

  • When do you enrol?

    We are now enroling for our courses starting 10th October 2022 (Oct-Dec term)
    Please see our Enrolment Page for all course timetables. Enrolment opens 8-10 weeks before the start of each term, once we have published the timetables on our Enrolment Page. You are strongly recommended to apply as early as possible as places are first come first served.

  • Can I join a course if I'm not a SOAS student?

    Yes, we welcome members of the public as well as SOAS students. You do not need to be a SOAS student to join our courses.

  • Are your courses online or on campus?

    We offer both Online and On Campus courses. Please see our Enrolment Page for full timetables.

  • What languages are taught at SOAS Language Centre?

    Our Short Courses lists the languages we may be able to schedule at some point during the year. We enrol termly in line with our term dates. Please see our Enrolment Page for current course timetables. 

  • What if I already have some knowledge of the language?

    Please see our Applying Page for details on whether you will need an assessment.

  • Can I study at SOAS LC if I'm not based in the UK?

    Yes, you can. Our Online courses mean you can study from anywhere with a good internet connection. Please check our Learner Support page prior to enrolling for an Online course.

  • Can I attend classes before enrolling?

    No. Only those who have enrolled are allowed to attend our classes. 

  • Is there a minimum age for joining a course?

    The Language Centre is a department of SOAS (University of London), so you must be at least 18.

  • Can I choose the days/times of my classes?

    This is only possible with Private Tuition arrangements as scheduled short courses run according to the published timetable. Students are only allowed to attend the classes for the course they are enrolled on.

  • Can I join a class late/Is there a waiting list?

    It is not usually possible to join a class late, but you may contact the relevant Language Administrator to see if an exception can be made.
    There are no waiting lists as such but you may ask them to contact you if there are places available in the next course to be offered.

  • Can I get a formal qualification?

    Although not accredited, a Certificate of Attendance can be provided upon request. A minimum of 60% attendance is required.

  • What are the fees and are there any discounts available?

  • How do I pay?

    You may pay in 3 ways. The majority of payments are made via our Online Store. You may also pay by bank transfer or an invoice can be raised for corporate sponsored students as per our Terms & Conditions. Please contact our Administrators should you require any further information.
    If you have had an assessment for a higher level course, or if you are eligible for a discount, the Online Store payment link will be emailed to you directly by the Administrator. Discounted links should be requested as outlined on our Fees Page.

  • Can I make a part payment for a course?

    No. All course fees must be paid in full upon enrolment.

  • Will I need to buy course materials?

    This depends on the course. Please check the course page for the Materials list.

  • Can I ask for my money back if I can’t/don’t attend the course or change my mind?

    This is not possible. We ask all applicants to make informed decisions before applying for a course. In fairness to everyone, the Terms and Conditions apply to all.

  • Do I need to have an e-mail account?

    Yes. E-mail is the primary form of communication at SOAS Language Centre.

  • Can I move to another course once I’ve paid?

    This may be possible, but you will need to email to the relevant Language Administrator to check.

  • When will I find out who my teacher is?

    Teacher information is normally provided 5 days prior to the course start date.

  • Will there be an exam at the end of my course?

    There is no formal examination, but there may be progress tests during the course.

  • Is it possible for me to switch between an online and an on-campus course?

    This may be possible, but you will need to email the relevant Language Administrator to check. Students are not permitted to switch​ back and forth between courses throughout the term and so if a move is possible it will need to be fixed for the rest of the term. Please note that fee difference as per our Terms and Conditions will apply, and those moving to a course with a lower fee will forfeit the difference if requested less than 14 working days before the start of the course.

  • What if I want private tuition?

  • Do you offer English for speakers of other languages?

    We do not offer classes in English as a Foreign Language. For English, please contact IFCELS.
