Language Centre FAQs

  • What languages are taught at the SOAS Language Centre and when?

SOAS Language Centre offers a very wide range of languages. Please visit Our Languages web pages.

Dates/days/times are stated in the timetables for each Enrolment period.

  • What does the course involve?

Go to the relevant language page, select the level of study (e.g. Beginners, Elementary), click on the Syllabus tab and open the pdf document for the target course.

  • What if I already have some knowledge of the language in which I’m interested?

You will need to fill out a self-assessment form on our Assessment and Placement page. We will then invite you to an assessment; this is free of charge.

  • What if I want private tuition?
We are usually able to offer bespoke tuition. Please contact the relevant Course Officer.
  • When and how do I apply?

You are strongly recommended to apply as early as possible and, at the very latest, five working days before the scheduled start of the course, so that you do not miss out on a place.

  • How do I apply?
Once the registration period is open (usually six weeks before the start of courses), you are asked to register online if applying for a Beginners-level course.
  • Can I join a class late?

This is usually not possible, but you may contact the relevant Course Officer to see if an exception can be made.

  • Is there a waiting list if I apply too late?

There are no waiting lists as such but you may e-mail the relevant Course Officer and ask them to contact you if there are places available in the next course to be offered.

  • Is there a minimum age for joining a course?
Yes. The Language Centre is a department of SOAS (University of London), so you must be 18.
  • Can I attend classes before applying?
No. We only allow attendance of classes to those who have registered. SOAS Language Centre offers various taster sessions throughout the year so you can see what our classes are like
  • Do I need to have an e-mail account?
Ideally, yes. E-mail is the primary form of communication at SOAS Language Centre and the best way to make an enquiry.
  • Can I choose the days/times of my classes?

This is only possible with bespoke tuition arrangements. Scheduled courses run according to the published timetable. You cannot attend a class on another day if you are unable to attend the class for which you have been registered.

  • Can I make a part payment for a course?

No. All course fees must be paid in full.

  • Are any discounts available?
SOAS students get a 25% discount on all scheduled courses; SOAS alumni and current members of various London colleges get a 10% discount (see Term Dates and Course Fees web pages). You will need to speak to a Course Officer if applying for a discount: this can’t be done online.
  • Can I ask for my money back if I can’t/don’t attend the course or change my mind?

We have standard Terms and Conditions and we ask all applicants to make informed decisions before applying for a course. In fairness to everyone, the Terms and Conditions apply to all.

  • Can I move to another course once I’ve paid?

This may be possible, but you will need to speak to the relevant Course Officer.
